Clare County Council is hosting its third annual Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) week with events scheduled across the county up to October 3. This forms part of the wider National and European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW), which is currently underway.

Paul Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, said, "Clare County Council’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals reflects our ongoing dedication to building resilient, inclusive and environmentally conscious communities. The wide range of events taking place across the county during SDG week highlights the many pathways to positive change. We encourage everyone to take part, be inspired, and see how everyday actions can contribute to global progress.”

The Sustainable Development Goal works towards ambitions such as an end to poverty, access to decent work, sustainable consumption, protection of nature, better health and wellbeing, universal access to education, gender equality, climate action and peaceful societies.

Morgan Lahiffe, Climate Action Coordinator, Clare County Council, continued, “Clare County Council is proud to champion the Sustainable Development Goals at local, regional, and national levels. The SDGs reflect our shared commitment to building a fairer, greener, and more prosperous future. Through our active involvement in SDG week and our role as an SDG Ambassador, we are engaging with communities across Clare to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and inspire meaningful action toward achieving these global goals.”

Helen Walsh, Clare County Librarian, added, "Clare County Council continues to demonstrate its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals through impactful initiatives like SDG week. This week offers a vital opportunity to highlight how we can work together to embed sustainability, equality, and inclusion into everyday services. By aligning our efforts with Ireland’s National Implementation Plan, we are helping to shape a more informed, resilient, and sustainable future for all communities in Clare.”

Having completed the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications SDG Champions Programme for 2023-2024, Clare County Council has now progressed to SDG Ambassadors. This role will see the Council take a leadership role and continue to promote, raise awareness and implement the SDGs, on local, regional and national levels.

In this role, Clare County Council integrates and embeds the SDGs into its work programmes across all directorates.

Clare’s SDG week features hands-on Skills for Life workshops, an Energy Café and engaging events like the Health & Wellbeing Expo. Learn practical ways to save energy, repair clothes, forage and maintain bikes, while exploring the UN Sustainable Development Goals through community-led sessions.

From candle making to an SDG masterclass, there is something for everyone.
