Essential works at the beloved Spanish Point beach are to be undertaken as soon as possible, the West Clare Municipal District has stated amid fears due to the large rock armour present in the area.
This news was confirmed in a response to a Notice of Motion submitted by Fianna Fáil Councillor Shane Talty who asked the Project Management Office to review the rock armour at the Spanish Point beach and carry out remedial works in the interest of health and safety.

Rock armour is an engineering method used for both riverbank and coastal protection. The large boulders/rocks are placed down for a variety of reasons; the main ones being to absorb wave energy, prevent erosion and to prevent damage to shorelines and structures.
In a written reply, Tony Neville, a Senior Executive Engineer at the West Clare Municipal District, confirmed: "Repair works to the existing rock armour at Spanish Point are deemed essential and will be undertaken as soon as possible."
