Limerick City and County Council has confirmed that land has been identified for a new park-and-ride facility close to the  Clare / Limerick border.

The new facility, is one of four being planned at strategic sites on the outskirts of Limerick city as part of the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy.

It is intended that commuters and other motorists will be able to park their vehicles at the facilities and continue into the city centre using public transport. This is planned under the transport development strategy for Limerick City and Shannon.

At a recent meeting of the metropolitan district in Limerick, Councillor Shane Hickey-O’Mara submitted a question seeking updates on this project.

In a written reply, transport engineer Hugh McGrath revealed that preferred sites have been identified in the Raheen and Mackey Roundbout areas.

Regarding the proposed park-and-ride on the Clare side of Limerick, he said a preferred located as been identified at Ennis Road, Coonagh and that the local authority is close to finalising necessary land agreements and that it's hoped to progress planning for the site in the first quarter of 2026.

A fourth area, in Ballysimon, is also close to being finalised but they first need to review the option with key stakeholders before progressing to the next stage.

Cllr Hickey-O’Mara welcomed the answer and spoke of the impact that park-and-ride facilities may have in Limerick and beyond.

“Limerick always comes to a standstill at peak hours, and initiatives like park-and-ride really help get people out of their cars and onto public transport, while also making it easier for those who rely on car use like vulnerable road users, or those with small children,” he said.

On the northside, he says there are serious congestion issues between Condell Road, Ennis Road and Sexton Street North, and this puts people off catching the bus.

“Hopefully this will break the stagnation and help get people out of their cars,” he concluded.
