Major north Clare road to close until next year for 'essential' water pipe construction

R477 Fanore Road will be closed until March 2025

A major road in north Clare is set to close until just before St Patrick's Day to allow a new sewage pipeline to be laid.

In a statement, Uisce Éireann said that the R477 Fanore Road would be temporarily closed for up to three months "to ensure the safe delivery of essential works to facilitate the upgrade of Ballyvaughan Sewerage Scheme".

The project will end the current practice of discharging untreated wastewater into the sea at Ballyvaughan Bay and ensure there is "capacity available for future social and economic growth in the area," the statement from Irish Water read.

The R477 will close temporarily from Monday, November 25 2024 until Friday, March 14, 2025 to facilitate construction of the new pipeline, with local access only from Doolin/Lisdoonvarna up to Ballyvaughan.

Locals "can be assured" that local and emergency traffic will be maintained to properties along the coastal road at all times, while local businesses along the route will operate as usual.

Pedestrian access will be available from Ballyvaughan village and a diversion route will be in place.

Describing the section of pipeline as “critical for the people of Ballyvaughan”, Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager, Esther White, thanked the community for their patience and co-operation in advance of the works.

“I can’t overstate the importance of this project for the local community. The upgrade to Ballyvaughan Sewerage Scheme is essential and will improve water quality in Ballyvaughan Bay for the local community and ensure further social and economic growth.

"This project will have benefits for generations to come," Esther concluded.

EPS Group is carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann with the project expected to be complete in Q4 of 2025.
