A detailed road assessment will be carried out after concerns were raised regarding a blind spot on a busy road in Clare, the Ennis Municipal District (MD) has confirmed.

At a meeting of the Ennis MD on Tuesday, September 9, Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy put forward a Notice of Motion, detailing the struggle that several drivers have on the R458 Old Gort Road. Specifically, at the Ballyduff Junction.

In this motion, Cllr Murphy said, "Many motorists that are trying to get onto the R458 from the two minor roads have commented on how 'blind' the view is at this location; therefore I am requesting that consideration is given to apply for appropriate funding under the Low Cost Safety Scheme in order to improve safety at this location."

In a written response, Patrick Tiernan, A/Senior Executive Engineer, confirmed that a detailed assessment of this junction will be carried out, in consultation with the Road Design Office.

He said, "Initial observations confirm that works are likely required to improve sightlines to an acceptable standard. This issue appears suitable for consideration under the National Transport Authority's Safety Improvement Works Scheme (Low Cost Safety Scheme)."

The Senior Engineer stated that subject to other priorities, it is intended that this junction will be included in the funding applications for 2026.
