Council warns public to avoid Lahinch beach as 'elevated levels of bacteria' found in water

It is not yet known when the order will be lifted

Clare County Council has issued a warning across their social media urging swimmers to avoid the much-loved Lahinch beach after tests showed elevated levels of bacteria.
The bathing prohibition (which is widely known as a 'do not swim' notice) was introduced at approximately 11am today, Wednesday, July 16.
It is not yet known when the order will be lifted. This restriction comes following advice from the HSE.
A red flag has been raised at the beach, indicating the bathing prohibition in the area and will stay in place until further notice.
A spokesperson for the council commented: "The restriction has been introduced after the results of routine bathing water samples showed elevated levels of bacteria. Run-off from the catchment after exceptionally heavy rainfall is a likely cause of the elevated levels of bacteria in the water."
In accordance with An Taisce’s blue flag programme, the blue flag at this bathing area will be removed until the water quality improves.
