This is part of an overall €1.3 million package for public libraries across the country, with over €100,000 going to Co Clare alone

Libraries across Clare now have laptops and tablets available for use by members of the public in library branches.

This equipment was made available by a recent grant from the Department of Rural and Community Affairs, from which Clare libraries received funding of €110,115.29 to provide new computers, laptops, iPads and other ICT equipment.

This is part of an overall €1.3 million package for public libraries across the country.

Tablets and laptops are available in the following libraries: De Valera, Ennistymon, Kilkee, Kilrush, Lisdoonvarna, Miltown Malbay, Scarriff, and Shannon.

Just tablets are available for use in the Corofin, Kildysart, Kilmihil, Killaloe, Newmarket, Sixmilebridge, and Tulla libraries.

The investment, under the Libraries Capital Programme, will assist libraries in becoming more digitally inclusive.
Communities across the county can benefit from the initiative, with a particular focus on supporting young people, elderly and the disadvantaged.
The recently opened De Valera Library also has additional IT equipment available to the public. This includes a lapsafe where members of the public using their library card can borrow laptops and tablets to use within the branch.
There is also a hublet unit with six additional tablets available for use. This is in addition to the public PCs and printing available there. The new library also has privacy booths, and a dedicated sensory resource for those with neurodiverse needs called a cubbie.
Helen Walsh, Clare County Librarian, said, “I am delighted today to announce the further rollout of portable IT equipment in our branch network. This will enable Clare libraries to replace outdated PCs, laptops and iPads with new devices for the benefit of library users of all ages. This initiative is all about making our public libraries more accessible and digitally inclusive places.”
Cllr Alan O’Callaghan, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, added, “It is essential that our libraries are able to provide up-to-date ICT infrastructure because they play a critical role in helping to support digital inclusion, as well as providing literacy and technology skills training for those looking for work. It is also vital our libraries continue to support marginalised and disadvantaged communities to access government services.”
