CLARE RTÉ journalist Zainab Boladale awarded a Limerick national school for their excellence in teaching and innovation.

Léargas are an organisation that manages national and international programmes in youth work, education and training.

St Paul’s National School, in Dooradoyle, was presented with an eTwinning National Quality Label Award at the event in Croke Park by Ms Boladale.

The national school joined schools from Italy, Spain, Greece and Belgium for the ‘The Healthy Active Sport’ project.

The project promoted physical activity and the development of fundamental movement schools by sharing traditional sports and games with partner European schools.

The event marked 35 years of Erasmus+ in Ireland and recognised funded projects for excellence in teaching and innovation over the past year.

Also announced at the event, Léargas has launched a new funding initiative which will offer staff, coaches and volunteers from grassroots sports clubs and organisations across Ireland an opportunity to travel for job shadowing or a coaching assignment abroad.

Lorraine Gilligan, Executive Director of Léargas, said that they are excited to see the diversity of Erasmus expanding and to introduce Erasmus+ Sport Mobility to the range of opportunities for learning, exchange and cooperation.

Ms Gilligan said, “The connection between sport and key priorities such as inclusion and diversity, participation, health and well-being are long established and we look forward to unlocking new experiences and practises through the new Erasmus+ sports strand targeting grassroots sports, coaches and volunteers.”

Proposals from sports organisations are welcome by Léargas. The first application deadline is the end of February 2023 with projects planned to start in summer 2023. Information sessions for relevant organisations are due to take place in early December.
