Permission sought to extend Clare burial ground to meet needs of local community

The local authority is proposing to add 350 double plots to the existing cemetery and the plan also includes provision for ash plots

CLARE County Council has formally submitted proposals to An Born Pleanála seeking approval to extend Drumcliffe Cemetery on the outskirts of Ennis.

The local authority is proposing to add 350 double plots to the existing cemetery and the plan also includes provision for ash plots.

"The development proposes to extend the existing burial ground in order to accommodate the Ennis Community. The development will also involve the construction of internal roads, footpaths and shared surfaces," states a report prepared by consultants on behalf of the council.

The project, if approved, will also see access roads being upgraded including the installation of lay-bys, turning circle and traffic calming measures.

Parking, drainage and footpaths will also be improved and there will be additional planting and landscaping.

A Columbarium wall and 'Reflectance Garden' are also a feature of the project which will be located on a 1.8 hectare greenfield site.

An Appropriate Assessment (AA) screening report was prepared. As a result, a Natura Impact Statement has been prepared as part of the application for approval in respect of the proposed development.

An Environmental Impact Assessment Screening Report was completed in support of the application and it concluded that an EIA is not required.

Any submissions or observations can be submitted to An Bord Pleanála by November 8.
