Slam locks that automatically secure the door when you shut it are a great option to deter crime
Following a spate of van robberies in recent weeks, Gardaí in Clare have issued crime prevention advice on how to best protect your vehicle.
Upgrading the locks that come installed is highly recommended as these can be vulnerable, according to members of An Garda Síochána. They advise deadlocks or hook locks as these use a separate key, making it much harder to drill or force open. Armoured lock protection plates could also be fitted to cover at risk areas.

On how to deter and delay possible criminals, shielding windows with mesh screens or replacing them with solid panels are top tips along with keeping any tools in a locked box inside the van. If they are marked with a UV light or engraving, these items will be harder to potentially sell-on. The use of alarms and/or trackers is also highly recommended because if the van is tempered with, an alert will be sent.
Gardaí say motorists should always try and park in well-lit, busy areas, ideally backed up to a wall so the rear doors cannot be opened. Slam locks that automatically secure the door when you shut it are also a great option to deter crime.
Commenting on these safety measures was a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána in Clare. They said, "No security measures are 100%, but each extra step makes your van less attractive to criminals. The goal is to make them think that it is not worth the risk or it is too much trouble."
