Gardai say 500kgs of herbal cannabis was seized during an intelligence-led operation on Wednesday

A man has been charged by gardai following a major drugs seizure in County Clare earlier this week.

Gardai have confirmed around 500kgs of herbal cannabis, worth an estimated €10 million, was seized at a property in County Clare during an intelligence-led operation on Wednesday

"As part of ongoing investigations by Revenue and the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau targeting drugs distribution networks, gardaí from the Clare Divisional Drugs Unit and Limerick-based garda units carried out an operation at a residential property in Co Clare on Wednesday, May 7, 2025," said a garda spokesperson following the seizure.

Two men, both aged in their 60s, were arrested during the operation and they were detained at garda stations in Clare and Limerick under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking Act 1996.

In an update, gardai confirmed one of the men has since been charged and will be brought before the courts.

"A man in his 60s, arrested by gardaí in connection with the seizure of cannabis valued at over €10 million during an operation in Co. Clare on May 7, has been charged. He is due to appear before a special sitting of Ennis District Court on Saturday, May 10 2025, at 3pm," read a brief statement issued by the Garda Press Office.

"The second individual who was arrested has been released from garda custody without charge. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions," it added.

The investigation remains ongoing.

A Revenue spokesperson said Wednesday's seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing joint investigations involving organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs.

"If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding drug smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on phone number 1800 295 295," they said.

The exact location of Wednesday's cannabis seizure has not been disclosed publicly.
