Man arrested after cargo vessel is boarded while anchored on the Shannon Estuary

A man is being questioned by gardai after he was arrested on board a cargo vessel on the Shannon Estuary

A man is being questioned at a garda station in County Clare after he was arrested on board a cargo vessel on the Shannon Estuary as part of an operation targeting serious organised crime.

Gardai have confirmed that officers from Revenue's customs service, supported by gardai from the National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau boarded the vessel on Wednesday.

"A male, aged 28 years, was arrested on the cargo vessel, on suspicion of committing a criminal offence contrary to Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006, facilitating/enhancing a criminal organisation to commit a serious offence," said as spokesperson who added: "The man has been detained under the provisions of Section 50 Criminal Justice Act 2007 at a Garda station in County Clare."

The man has been detained at a Garda station in Co. Clare.

Separately, gardai have confirmed that four other men - aged 30, 31, 39 and 45 -  who were arrested as part of the same investigation remain in custody.

The were arrested earlier this week on suspicion of committing a criminal offence contrary to Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006, facilitating/enhancing a criminal organisation to commit a serious offence at Meenogahane, County Kerry on January 13.

They are detained under the provisions of Section 50 Criminal Justice Act, 2007 at garda stations in County  Kerry.

Investigations are ongoing.
