Ahead of the Women's EURO 2025 qualifier match this evening between old rivals Ireland and England, player and pioneer of the the sport for women in Ireland Marie McKenna reminisced on her time as captain of the national team.
In a video posted by the FAI, McKenna revealed she was the first player to captain the Irish women's football team to against England, which took place on Tuesday 2nd May 1978.
Debuting in 1974 for the national team, a defender and captain still feels immense pride in representing her country, saying "we felt very proud that we were going to be the first Irish women's team to represent their country against England.
"Whether it's the first time you've ever put a jersey on or you've put it on ten times, those memories are for life."
Ireland will once again face off again England this evening in Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Kick off is at 7:30pm.
