Clare event organisers invited to submit nominations for National Heritage Week Awards

The Irish Whale and Dolpin Group based in Kilrush, Co. Clare, took home the Wild Child Award for their ‘Be a Marina Biologist for a Day’ event at the 2023 awards ceremony

The Heritage Council has announced details of this year’s National Heritage Week Awards, inviting nominations from all event organisers in Clare.

Every year, the Heritage Council seeks nominations for individuals or groups of people who showcased successful heritage projects and hosted engaging events during the festival.

Among the winners last year were the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (pictured above) based in Kilrush Co. Clare, who took home the Wild Child Award for their ‘Be a Marine Biologist for a Day’ event which welcomed future marine biologists to explore the world of Ireland’s ocean giants at its headquarters.

The event was aimed at children and included an introduction to whale and dolphin evolution and anatomy with real whale and dolphin bones, interactive games and a scavenger hunt.

Event organisers, who must put themselves forward for consideration for an award, can submit nominations for the National Heritage Awards from below, before the deadline on Tuesday, September 24, at www.heritageweek.ie/awards

Included in the award categories is a county award which recognises the best heritage project in each county.

In 2023, Clarecastle and Ballyea Heritage and Wildlife Group were the winners in Clare for their exhibition celebrating 60 years of Tidy Towns which included a guided viewing of historic Barntick House and a display of ancient farm machinery.

All participants who successfully upload a heritage project on the National Heritage Week website by Tuesday, September 24, will be considered for a National Heritage Week Award.

Projects will be assessed on the basis of their local reach and community engagement, educational value and the level to which they involve different age groups.

The awards ceremony will take place on November 15, 2024 at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.
