Clare County Council has formally submitted an application for government funding to progress the regeneration and revitalisation of Crusheen village.

A presentation of the Draft Crusheen Mobility Plan, which includes proposals to reopen Crusheen Railway Station and to develop a community hub and creche, was hosted by the  local authority before the final application for RRFD funding was submitted.

"The mobility plan which has been prepared over the past ten months or so involved three rounds of public consultation and aims to enhance the accessibility into and around Crusheen by proposing a number of enhancements to the footpaths, lighting and and public spaces," explained senior planner Brian McCarthy.

He told Clare FM's Morning Focus the plan, which has the support of Iarnród Éireann, also provides for new cycle paths, improved bus stops, traffic calming measures and improved access to Crusheen railway station.

Tree planting and the erection of new signage as you approach the village is also proposed.

Local councillor Pat Hayes says he believes the proposed mobility plan ticks all the boxes under the Rural Regeneration Development Fund which provides for grant support of up to €1m.

"Crusheen is the youngest village in the county in terms of the population. There is a huge growing community in Crusheen and the hinterland around it. This is a great time for Crusheen in a sense," he told Clare FM adding that the pre-planning process and engagement over the past year has shown the value of working together to deliver and prepare.

A decision on the application is not expected to be made until after the summer.
