Blow for Lidl as permission is refused for new store in Clare town

Clare County Council has cited five reasons for refusing permission for the proposed development in Ennistymon

Discount retailer Lidl has been refused permission to build a new store on the outskirts of Ennistymon in north Clare.

The company had submitted an application for permission to build the new store on lands at Lahinch Road in the townland of Deerpark West.

According to planning documents lodged with the local authority late last year, the proposed development was to consist of a two-storey discount foodstore, comprising a gross floor area of more than 2,200 square metres.

In its application, Lidl indicated there would be a total of 87 car parking spaces with a vehicular entrance located at Lahinch Road.

However, the retailer's plan to expand in County Clare have been dealt a blow after planners at Clare County Council decided to refuse permission - citing five different reasons.

In its decision, the local authority maintains the proposed development contravenes the Clare County Development Plan and would "seriously impact on the vitality and vibrancy of Ennistymon Town Centre" given its location away from the core town centre.

The council says a strategic aim of the Development Plan is to "consolidate town centres" and that it is not satisfied that a location closer to the town centre is not available, suitable and viable.

Council planners have also cited deficiencies in the road network stating that delays and queuing were likely. "The proposed development would render the network unsuitable to carry the increased road traffic likely to be generated," they stated.

The local authority adds it is “precluded from granting planning permission” due to deficiencies and overflows at the Ennistymon Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Lidl has four weeks to decide whether or not to lodge an appeal against the decision.
