Young woman who tragically died during Cork marathon named locally
The young woman who died after reaching the finish line of the 10km Cork mini marathon has been named locally.
The 24-year-old girl was Ellen Cassidy, from Cork City, who fell ill after she completed the run and died in hospital shortly after.
Marathon organisers said: "Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased."
Ellen was a talented swimmer who competed for Ireland as a girl.
She was a graduate of University College Cork (UCC) and a former student at St Angela’s College Cork, and will be missed deeply by her peers, friends and community.

There was a full marathon and a half marathon held in Cork on Sunday June 1 and more than 11,000 runners took part.
Countless tributes have poured in on Facebook following the tragedy, with a swimming club who said: "Our swimming community is deeply saddened by Ellen’s passing. Her spirit, dedication, and friendship touched us all. We send our heartfelt condolences to everyone at Dolphin Swimming Club from all at Sundays Well Swimming Club."
Another person said, "Such a beautiful young lady. Always smiling with a heart of gold. We are absolutely devastated and are thinking of Tom, Vi, Charlie and Mary at this tragic time".
Another tribute said, "So heartbreaking to hear this news. My thoughts are with Ellens family at this most difficult time. May she rest in peace."
