A man is understood to have died following a shooting incident at a retail premises in Co Carlow.
The PA news agency understands that the dead man’s wounds were self-inflicted.
The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been requested to attend the Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow town as a precaution.
The body of the man remains at the scene but will not be removed until the area has been declared safe.
The shopping centre has been evacuated but a Garda spokesperson said there is no further concern for public safety.
Gardai said they had attended the scene after the alarm was raised shortly before 6.15pm.
A large cordon has been put in place around the shopping centre in Carlow town.
Gardai, ambulance and fire service are at the scene and a helicopter was hovering overhead.
A Garda spokesperson said: “The premises has been evacuated and the scene is preserved.
“The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been requested to attend.
“At this time, there is no further concern for public safety.”
The spokesperson said anyone who may have recorded footage of the incident is urged not to share it on social media platforms or messaging apps, but instead to provide it to gardai at Carlow Garda Station.
