A serving garda is recovering in hospital after he was seriously injured in a road traffic incident in County Louth in the early hours of this Friday morning

A serving garda is recovering in hospital after he was seriously injured in a road traffic incident in County Louth in the early hours of this Friday morning.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the 'dangerous driving incident' which happened in Ardee at around 4.20am.

"Gardaí were on patrol in the Clonmore estate at around 4.20am and approached a van that was parked up. The van was driven at gardai and hit a garda who had exited the patrol car to investigate," said a garda spokesperson.
 
"He sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transferred to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda," they added.

An investigation has been launched and the scene has been preserved to facilitate a technical examination.
 
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward and a
ny road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and who were travelling in Clonmore Estate area between 4am and 4.40am are asked to make this footage available.

Gardai say welfare services have been put in place for the injured garda member and his colleagues.
