A child was seriously injured during an alleged assault incident in Charleville overnight, gardaí have confirmed.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene on Monday, August 19 at approximately 11pm. 

The child was taken to Cork University Hospital with their injuries.

This Tuesday morning, a garda cordon remained around a damaged vehicle in the New Line area of the town. The vehicle appears to have the back window smashed. 

An official garda statement reads: "A child was injured in the course of the incident and was taken to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries. 

"Investigations are ongoing."
