Joe Biden calls outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar following the announcement of his resignation
Following the announcement last week that Taoiseach Leo Varadkar would be stepping down from his role, US president Joe Biden reached in a phone call with the soon-to-be former Taoiseach to hail the good relationship that two shared.
Following Taoiseach Leo Varadkar's visit to the states for St Patrick's Day only a week ago, I doubt he expected to be speaking to the United States President again so soon.
Reports from the White House say President Biden called to recognise the seven years of service Varadkar gave as Taoiseach and Tánaiste of Ireland. Also reflecting on the good realtionship and cooperation that the two have shared.
They also noted: "Recent progress made made in Northern Ireland with the restoration of its Executive and Assembly, reaffirming the critical role these institutions play in preserving the gains of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement."
The call concluded with President Biden looking forward to continued cooperation between the US and Ireland once the new Taoiseach is elected.
