Suspect arrested following serious assault incident is released without charge

A man who was being questioned about a serious assault incident at the weekend has been released without charge.

Gardaí who are investigating the incident, which occurred at Patrick Street, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath in the early hours of Sunday morning, say a file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

"At approximately, 1.40am Gardaí were alerted to a disturbance outside a premises on Patrick Street, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath involving two men. A man, aged in his mid 50s was removed from the scene by emergency services personnel to Regional Hospital Mullingar. He is currently in Beaumont Hospital where his condition is understood to be critical," stated a spokesperson.

The scene of the incident was preserved for forensic examination and investigations are ongoing.

Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The man who was being questioned by gardai is also aged in his 50s.
