Almost €1million drop in TV licence revenue as fallout from RTÉ controversy continues

Laois TD says changes to TV licence inspection scheme must not hit vulnerable

The number of TV licences issued in June and the first week in July has dropped by over 5,000 when compared to the same time last year as the fall out from the RTÉ payments scandal continues, the Dáil has heard.

There was a dramatic fall in the first week in July, in particular, when with 11,241 licences issued compared to 15,432 in the same time last year.

The fall in TV licence numbers comes as RTÉ has been embroiled in controversy over the publication of inaccurate figures for the earnings of presenter Ryan Tubridy.

There has been significant fall-out on commercial spending on events by RTÉ.

The details on licence figures were released by Minister for Media Catherine Martin in a reply to a parliamentary question from Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin.

It has been confirmed that 5,837 fewer TV licences were issued during June and the first week in July than in the same period in 2022.

With a TV licence costing €160, the fall in numbers represents a loss of €933,920 in revenue.

Deputy Griffin also asked in a written question if the minister can account for any variations in the numbers; and if she will make a statement on the matter. A reply from the Department is awaited.
