A section of the M18 motorway remains closed this Thursday morning following an incident in which a driver suffered a "medical emergency".
In a statement, gardaí said they, along with emergency services, "responded to a medical emergency involving a motorist on the M18 motorway, southbound" shortly after 5.30pm on Wednesday evening, June 12.
It is understood that the motorist may have suffered some kind of medical episode and accidently entered the southbound lanes, travelling north against traffic between Junctions 11 at Killoo and 12 Dromoland/Clare Inn.
The motorist was taken to University Hospital Limerick where he's said to be in a critical condition.

Due to an earlier accident on the M18 (southbound), passengers should allow for extra time to reach the airport this morning.
The M18 between junctions 12 and 11 southbound is currently closed with diversions in place.

"The road remains closed between these junctions, and local traffic diversions are in place," gardaí said.
Shannon Airport have issued a warning for passengers to allow extra time this Thursday while travelling to the airport.
Clare County Council have also issued a notice to the public advising that the M18 southbound is "likely to remain closed for some time" and that diversions are currently in place through Clarecastle.
