Four flights were diverted to Shannon Airport this Monday

A NUMBER of flights were diverted to Shannon Airport this Monday due to the severe weather conditions - particularly in the UK and across Europe.

A Status Orange Low Temperature/Ice warning was in place until midday and a separate Freezing Fog warning remains in effect for Clare and several other counties until midnight.

The Shannon Airport Group has confirmed that four flight diversions were facilitated at the airport due to adverse weather conditions.

Commenting, a spokesperson said: “All air services from Shannon Airport are running to schedule today.  Our team has been working 24/7 to ensure the airport’s runway, taxiways and apron remain free from ice and will continue to do so during this cold snap.”

The spokesperson added that the first of the four diverted flights (EI841 from Amsterdam to Cork) landed safely at Shannon at 11.55am while EI711 (London Heathrow to Cork) landed at 12.04pm.

The airport also responded to a medical diversion onboard a British Airways flight BA255 London Heathrow to Bridgetown, Barbados which diverted to Shannon. The aircraft landed safely at 1.20pm where it was met by airport staff and emergency services.

The final diversion involved a KLM flight from Amsterdam to Cork diverted. That plane landed safely at 1.30pm.

Shannon Airport personnel remain on standby and the airport is available for further diversions if required.
