Both the Ennis Municipal District (MD) and An Garda Síochána have confirmed that there will be an increased and highly visible Garda presence within the town centre over the Christmas period.

At a recent meeting of the MD, Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle put forward a Notice of Motion, requesting that the relevant Garda Management allocate additional Garda personnel to Ennis for the majority of December.

"This measure aims to ensure that shoppers, party-goers, tourists, staff and businesses can fully enjoy the festive spirit this Christmas," said Cllr Guilfoyle.

In a written reply, Patrick Tiernan, A/Senior Engineer, confirmed that the Ennis MD have liaised with An Garda Síochána in respect to a policing plan and is "happy to report" that there will be an increased and highly visible Garda presence within the town centre for the Christmas period.

Expanding further, Mr Tiernan explained, "This includes both foot patrols and mountain bike patrols. The policing plan is targeted to tackle anti-social behaviour, alcohol consumption, illegal parking, professional begging and shop-lifting."

A Community Engagement Garda van will also be parked at The Height for most days throughout the festive season. This targeted policing plan commenced on Friday, December 5 and will conclude on Christmas Eve.

The engineer then stated: "We would like to take the opportunity to thank An Garda Síochána for their continued support to Ennis MD throughout the year, particularly for their assistance with illegal encampments and for providing attendance and support for various public events including the switching on of the Christmas Lights and the St Patrick's Day Parade."
