Planning permission sought for major expansion of popular Clare museum

Planning permission has been sought for a major extension to a popular museum in Shannon.

The Shannon Aviation Museum has submitted an application to expand their site, located in Smithstown, with a variety of exciting features planned. 

If successful, the iconic tourist spot will see the construction of an extension to the existing Aircraft Museum building which will include a mini-cinema as well as a two-storey addition to the main building. A kids zone, coffee shop, conference room and gift shop are also included in the plans.

The application seeks approval for internal modifications and all ancillary site works.

The Shannon Aviation Museum features Ireland’s rich aviation heritage and the historic legacy of Shannon Airport, renowned for being one of the world’s first transatlantic airports. 

The museum features an impressive collection of aircraft, jet engines, cockpitsand aviation artifacts, along with interactive flight simulators and educational exhibits. 

It offers visitors an engaging experience through guided tours, STEM learning programs, and hands-on activities that inspire future aviators and engineers.  

A submission or observation in relation to the application can be made in writing to the planning authority for a prescribed fee of €20. This must be within five weeks of the authority first receiving the planning application. 

Any submissions or observations on the proposed project must be submitted by December 9, with the final decision on the planning application due on January 8, 2026.
