BREAKING: Clare County Council makes decision on its nomination for Presidential Election

The decision not to vote for presidential hopeful came after just 10 minutes of deliberating

Clare County Council has today decided not to nominate a candidate for the upcoming Irish Presidential Election on October 24.

After hearing from five out of six candidates, no nominations were put forward by any members of the chamber. Presidential hopeful Keith McGrory did not contest, despite confirming his attendance.

Each person aiming for a nomination was given five minutes of speaking time and a further five minutes for a question and answer segment. The decision not to vote for presidential hopeful came after just 10 minutes of deliberating.

Six names were put forward for this Special Meeting, including Searlait Ní Chianáin, Diarmaid Mulcahy, Sarah-Louise Mulligan, Dr Cora Stack, Gerben Uunk and Keith McGrory- who did not attend.

They all failed to secure the support of the chamber. Therefore, none of these candidates will appear on the ballot next month.

However, three names are currently confirmed to be on the ballot so far.

These are former Dublin GAA manager Jim Gavin for Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys and Independent candidate Catherine Connolly, who has the backing of multiple parties, including Sinn Féin and the Social Democrats.

The deadline for candidates to get on the ballot paper falls at lunchtime this Wednesday, September 24.
