Shannon Airport welcomes new state-of-the-art facility for people with complex care needs

Shannon Airport is proud to announce its newest step toward inclusive travel with the opening of a fully operational 'Changing Places' toilet facility - the first of its kind in County Clare.

Situated in the Departures area, this state-of-the-art facility ensures that people with complex care needs are supported to travel through the airport. 

'Changing Places' goes beyond just standard accessible restrooms. The new facility features a height-adjustable adult-sized changing bench, overhead hoist system, centrally placed toilet, accessible shower and a washbasin—all laid out with ample space for use by people with a range of disabilities who might require assistance.

It has been built in accordance with National Disability Authority and the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design guidelines for 'Changing Places' toilets. This initiative is the latest in a series of accessibility-focused enhancements, reinforcing the airport’s commitment to making air travel a welcoming experience for everyone.

In recent years, Shannon Airport introduced a range of inclusive services.

In 2024, it joined the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative to support more than half a million people in Ireland living with non-visible disabilities. Passengers can avail of a free Sunflower lanyard to discreetly indicate they have a non-visible disability and may welcome assistance.

Airport staff have also received specialist training to recognise the symbol and offer time, understanding and support to those wearing it.

Passengers who are neurodivergent can also access the airport’s Sensory Room located in the Transit Lounge. This was launched in 2017 and was the first of its kind in a European airport.

In 2022, Shannon Airport was also recognised by the World Health Organisation as one of only two airports globally to achieve Age-Friendly Airport status; thanks to initiatives such as dedicated parking, clearer signage, sheltered walkways and more seating throughout the terminal.
