UHL expansion aided by recruitment

Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has visited UHL to see the progression of works on the 96-bed block

Bi-weekly recruitment reviews at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) are playing a key role in ensuring the hospital’s new 96-bed block (four 24-bed inpatient wards) will open on schedule by September 2025.

This was revealed in response to a question from Nenagh councillor, Seamus Morris at the Regional Health Forum West in University Hospital Galway.

Ian Carter, CEO Mid-West Acute and Older People Services, HSE Mid-West said: “The construction of the first 96-bed block at UHL remains on track and following completion of construction and commissioning, the block will be fully operational by September 2025.

“Recruitment remains on track and we are utilising both local and international recruitment campaigns across all grades and disciplines,” added Mr Carter.

The works will include an underground car-park as part of the overall masterplan for the UHL Campus, along with ground floor and first floor shell spaces together providing the lower floors of the next hospital block envisaged in the site masterplan.

Speaking to the Limerick Leader, Cllr Seamus Morris said he has “constant concerns” about the consistent overcrowding at UHL and has sent a number of requests to Limerick City and County Council's fire chief to carry out an inspection at UHL.

The Non-Party councillor said there will be “absolute chaos” in UHL if a fire starts. Cllr Morris feels safety hasn't improved at the hospital in recent years and he said there was 124 people on trolleys last Thursday.

Fianna Fáil Minister of State and Limerick TD Niall Collins previously welcomed the plans to deliver a new 96-bed ward at UHL.

“The provision of additional bed capacity is critical to solving the issues we’ve been experiencing in Limerick for far too long. Both the new bed capacity and new personnel are critical. It is something we’ll continue to pursue,” he said.
