Clare Council urges swimmers to prioritise beach safety during June Bank Holiday Weekend

As the June bank holiday weekend approaches, Clare County Council are urging the public to prioritise safety when visiting beaches in the county, to ensure the well-being of both residents and visitors.
Water Safety Development Officer, Maebh Collins, reminds beach goers that the safest place to swim is at lifeguarded locations. 
“While this bank holiday weekend might not have the sunshine we had hoped for, we still need to be mindful of our safety when visiting out beaches. We ask swimmers to swim between the red and yellow flags on beaches with lifeguards, be aware of weather and water conditions and heed all warnings,” she said.
 
“It is also advisable to know the tides and be conscious of currents. Stay within your depth and swim parallel to shore and never put pressure on others to take risks. We also ask people to avoid swimming at night.”
County Clare has nine Blue Flags beaches for the 2025 season. The Blue Flag award reflects exceptional standards in water quality, environmental education, beach management, safety and visitor amenities.
These beaches include, White Strand Ballycuggeran, White Strand Doonbeg, Mountshannon Lough Derg, Fanore, Spanish Point, Kilkee, Lahinch, Cappagh and the privately operated Kilrush Marina.
