The Burren Smokehouse has been served a Prohibition Order under the Food Safety Authority of Ireland's (FSAI) 1998 Act.

A Prohibition Order is issued if the activities (handling, processing, disposal, manufacturing, storage, distribution or selling food) involve or are likely to involve a serious risk to public health from a particular product, class, batch, or item of food.

The effect is to prohibit the sale of the product, either temporarily or permanently.  Overall, this order is only issued when there is a non-compliance with food legislation.

The order was served in February to Birgitta Curtin, owner of the Burren Smokehouse, which is located on the Kincora Road in Lisdoonvarna.

In a statement by the FSAI, they confirmed the following batches of the business' food products are set to be recalled and destroyed: 411712/429721, 413211/52221, 422411/51721, 321411/428921, 321613/428921, 327911/429121, 320913
and 27008.

Other reasonings for this Prohibition Order include:

Failure to produce records required by an authorised officer on October 22, 2024, for food batches 321411/428921, 321613/428921, 327911/429121, 320913.

Failure to take measures to protect the consumer regarding batches 321411/428921, 321613/428921, 327911/429121 and 320913.

Failure to notify the competent authority of the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in batches 321411/428921, 321613/428921, 327911/429121 and 320913 following own testing.

Failure without reasonable cause to comply with a requirement of an authorised officer, regarding the supervised reworking of Listeria monocytogenes batches 411712/429721, 413211/52221, 422411/51721.

It is unknown when this order will be lifted.
