An Aer Lingus plane which diverted to Shannon Airport after developing mechanical issues had to be towed from the runway after it landed, a spokesperson for the airport has confirmed.
The incident, which saw emergency crews being deployed, happened on Saturday morning after the Captain alerted the authorities while flying over St George’s Channel - between Wales and Ireland.
A spokesperson for The Shannon Airport Group has confirmed that a passenger flight routing from Rome to Dublin diverted to Shannon Airport landing safely at 9.46am on Saturday.
"Aer Lingus flight EI-401, an Airbus A320-200, issued a pan-pan while routing to Dublin from Rome. As a precaution, Shannon Airport fire and rescue service were on hand for the aircraft’s arrival," said the spokesperson.

After it landed, the aircraft was towed to its parking stand at 10.05am and arrangements made to transport the passengers to Dublin.
A pan-pan alert indicates there is a urgent situation on board an airplane but it is not as serious as a may-day alert.
There are no reports of any injuries arising from Saturday's incident but an investigation will be carried out to establish what happened.
It's reported that another plane which was due to land around the same time was asked to enter a holding pattern for a short time to facilitate the safe landing of the Aer Lingus plane.
