The planning application for a new waste water treatment plant in Kilkee has been put on hold by Clare County Council.
The council have sought more information from Uisce Éireann in relation to a number of aspects of the application, which was submitted in early January.
Uisce Éireann seek permission to build a pumping station and wastewater treatment plant on two separate sites in the townlands of Kilkee Lower and Foohagh, Kilkee, on the Dunlicky Road.
The proposal saw major opposition from local residents and representatives, who have objected to the proposed location for the treatment plant and its proximity to the scenic cliff walk on the Dunlicky road and bathing spots at the Pollock Holes.
Over 80 submissions were lodged over the application with the council.
In correspondence on the planning file, senior executive planner with Clare County Council Garreth Ruane outlined a number of points where the council were seeking further information and revised plans from Uisce Éireann.
The council have requested the State body to outline how the capacity of the proposed treatment plant will cope with seasonal population increases.
A popular summer holiday destination, Kilkee sees its population significantly increase to almost 15,000 people during peak season.
The potential negative "visual impact" of the plant was also a concern highlighted in the correspondence, as the proposed location is "located within a settled landscape, is in close proximity to a heritage site, and is accessed from a designated scenic route".
Additional concerns were raised regarding potential noise pollution from the plant for nearby dwellings and mobile homes, and traffic accommodations for "sizeable vehicles" during and after construction.
Under the relevant legislation, Uisce Éireann have six months to respond to the request from Clare County Council.
