Tributes pour in after passing of Clare hurling legend

There has been much sadness in Clare following the passing of one of the counties greatest sporting legends.

Jackie O'Gorman, a former Cratloe and Clare hurling legend, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 23.

Rated as "arguably one of the finest defenders that ever wore the Saffron and Blue", Jackie O'Gorman was a key part of the great Clare hurling teams of the 1970s, lining out for his county in every single provincial championship from 1968 to 1979.

He played in four Munster Finals - in 1972, 1974, 1977 and 1978 - and in the back-to-back National Hurling League wins of 1977 and 1978.

His club, Cratloe GAA posted a heartfelt tribute on Facebook following the news of Mr O'Gorman's passing that simply read "Codladh Samh, Ár Laoch" (Sleep well, our hero).

Neighbouring club Clonlara GAA also posted a tribute, extending their "sincere condolences to the family, friends and Cratloe GAA Club clubmates of legendary Clare defender Jackie O’Gorman."

Mr O'Gorman, beloved husband of Joan (Bennis), and dearly loved father of Mary, Angela, Jacqueline and Joanne, will be sadly missed by his loving sons-in-law John, Fergal, Richard and Tommy, his adored grandchildren Robyn, Jack, Sam, Eve, and George, brother Michael and sister Bridie, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends.

He is predeceased by his sisters Mary and Chrissie and brother Eddie.

He will repose at St. John’s Church, Cratloe on Thursday, January 25, from 5pm to 7.30pm. Requiem Mass will take place on Friday, January 26 at 12 noon followed by burial in Craughaun Cemetery.

House private. Family flowers only, donations, if desired, to St. Vincent de Paul.

May He Rest in Peace
