Clare man accused of making threats ordered to stay off social media

A COUNTY Clare man has been ordered to stay off all social media platforms after being accused of threatening to kill or cause serious harm to two men via social media.

At Ennis District Court this Wednesday, Martin Hannon, aged 41, with an address at Boheraroan, Newmarket on Fergus, appeared in connection with two charges of threatening to kill or cause serious harm to two males on dates between November 6 and November 16 last.

In the case, Mr Hannon is accused of making the threats against two named individuals.

The two charges are contrary to Section 5 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.

There was no objection to bail provided that Mr Hannon stay off all social media platforms and not make broadcasts from any social media platform.

After reading the bail conditions, Judge Alec Gabbett said the bail condition concerning social media is the most serious aspect of it.

He asked solicitor for Mr Hannon, Stiofan Fitzpatrick ‘are you happy with that?” and in reply, Mr Fizpatrick said: “Yes’.

Detective Garda Noelle Bergin told the court she arrested Mr Hannon on the Dock Road in Limerick at 2.50pm on November 16 last.

Mr Hannon was charged with the two offences at Shannon garda station the following day and made no reply when charged. He was released on station bail to appear before Ennis District Court.

Sergeant Louis Moloney told Judge Gabbett that directions from the DPP are required and that Mr Hannon could be remanded on bail to the same court to January 24 next.

Judge Gabbett noted this and he granted legal aid to solicitor, Stiofan Fitzpatrick to represent the accused.

The bail conditions also require Mr Hannon to lodge €500 cash, sign on once a week at his local garda station and have no direct or indirect contact with the alleged injured parties.
