AN ICONIC writer from Clare is the inspiration for a name change of a popular local library.

The renaming of Scariff Library in honour of Edna O'Brien was suggested by Cllr Pat Hayes at the latest Killaloe Municipal District (MD) meeting.

Saying that the novelist and playwright from Tuamgraney has made an “immeasurable impact on Irish literature and culture”, Cllr Hayes said that the name change may “inspire future generations”.

“Edna O'Brien has not only gained international acclaim, but has also played a pivotal role in shaping the literary landscape of Ireland,” Cllr Hayes said.

“By naming the library after her, we pay tribute to her profound impact on literature and her role as a source of inspiration and pride for our local community.”

The proposal was widely accepted and supported by council members, and talks are underway with the county librarian and the Killaloe MD coordinator. Ms O'Brien is now 93-years-old.

Brian McCarthy, Senior Planner and Killaloe MD Coordinator said that the proposal is both “fitting and appropriate” in recognition of Ms O’Briens 60 years of work.

He said: “Born nearby in Drewsborough, Edna O’Brien is one of the most celebrated writers in the English language and arguably Ireland’s greatest living author. The proposal, in recognition of her achievements, her brilliant consistency, literary skill, courage and impact of her work is significantly supported.

“The proposal is even more apt and fitting as the Edna O’Brien library would be the  first Clare County Council building named after a Clare woman and a literary pioneer.”

Cllr Hayes continued on from Mr McCarthy by saying: “It is fitting that we recognise her [Edna O’Briens] contributions in a meaningful and lasting way.

“I propose that Scariff Library be officially  named the "Edna O'Brien Library" to celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions  of this iconic Irish author to the world of literature. As a native of our locality, naming the library  after Edna O'Brien will serve as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of our community.”
