The addition of the Limerick schools was announced Minister Heather Humphreys
THIRTY-three additional schools in Clare will see pupils receive hot meals, as part of a government scheme.
The Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys TD has announced that an extra 150,000 primary school students nationwide will benefit from hot meals in school from spring 2024.
The programme, which exists to provide “regular and nutritious food” for children to “take full advantage of the education given to them”, was introduced in 2019. The programme will now service over 1,400 schools nationwide.
33 more primary schools in Clare will benefit from the latest announcement on the scheme made by Ms Humphreys: “A child born in Ireland today will be guaranteed access to a hot meal by the time they start school,” the minister said.
“When I was appointed Minister for Social Protection in June 2020, there were 30 schools receiving hot meals. I am absolutely determined to continue to expand the Hot School Meals Programme to every primary school in Ireland.
“The major expansion to 1,400 schools nationwide now means we are well on course to achieve that objective.”
The Department of Social Protection provides the funding to schools for the School Meals Programme and it is the responsibility of schools to choose their supplier.
