Clare Museum to host talks series on art, history and culture

‘Portrait of a Woman’, thought to be the mother of the Clare painter, Frederic William Burton, who will be the subject of the first of four talks at the Clare Museum

CLARE Museum will host a series of public talks on Wednesday nights throughout the month of October.

Earlier this year, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media announced a support package for the night-time economy that included a new pilot scheme, in partnership with the Arts Council, to help existing arts and cultural spaces to open their doors to new late-night activity, and Clare Museum has successfully applied for funding under the scheme.

A total of four talks will be held each Wednesday night at Clare Museum in Ennis, and will include topics such as Clare artists, ringforts and the Spanish flu.

The schedule of public talks in October is as follows:

  • Wednesday October 4 at 7.30pm
Dr Marie Bourke, formerly of the National Gallery of Ireland: ‘The Women in the Life of Frederic Burton’
  • Wednesday, October 11, 8 pm
John Sheehan, Archaeology Department, University College Cork: ‘The Supernatural: protecting ringforts’
  • Wednesday, October 18, 8 pm
Dr Ida Milne, Lecturer in European History, Carlow College: ‘Spanish flu in Ireland and Clare’
  • Wednesday, October 25, 7.30 pm
Dr Marie Bourke, formerly of the National Gallery of Ireland: ‘William Mulready (1786-1863), painting scenes of everyday life’.

Admission to Clare Museum for these public talks is free, but due to limited seating, those interested in attending need to book their seat in advance. You can book your spot by emailing: claremuseum@clarecoco.ie
