A NEW litter and dog waste bin at the Westbury Estate bus stop is due to be put in place on Corbally Road.
The motion, proposed by Councillor Pat O'Gorman, was put forth during the Shannon Municipal District Meeting held on September 19, 2023.
Councillor Pat O'Gorman, in his submission of the Notice of Motion, emphasised the urgent need for a waste disposal solution at the Westbury bus stop. The location, adjacent to the Westbury Estate wall, serves as a vital bus stop for local residents and commuters. Unfortunately, it has also been notorious for litter accumulation, making it a troublesome "black spot" for the community.
In a nod to Lahinch's promenade, which boasts dedicated bins for litter and dog waste, the councillor highlighted the importance of responsible waste management in public spaces.
Responding to the motion, Tom Mellett, Senior Executive Engineer, acknowledged the Council's Leave no Trace Policy, which encourages individuals to carry their waste and minimise packaging.
However, he recognised the prevailing tradition within the Municipal District of providing public bins at bus stops, which aims to maintain cleanliness and discourage littering. Mr Mellett pledged to arrange for the installation of a litter and dog waste bin at the Westbury bus stop.
The next steps will involve the procurement, installation, and maintenance of the new bin at the specified location.
