A Clare national school has received planning permission for the installation of a new environmentally friendly heating system.
The planning application - submitted in May 2023 by the Commissioners of Public Works (OPW) on behalf of the Department of Education and approved this week (July 18 2023) - allows for the installation of an external heat pump to the rear of a proposed school building at Scoil Naisúnta Cnoc an Ein (Knockanean National School) in Ennis.
According to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), heat pumps do not rely on fossil fuels, reduce heating bills by improving energy efficiency, and support the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The school has also received permission to construct a 2.6 metre high accoustically insulated compound enclosure of approximately 45sq metres.
Scoil Naisúnta Cnoc an Ein previously received planning permission in 2020 for the construction of a new two storey primary school building with a floor area of 1720sq metres.
This includes eight new classrooms, a general purpose room and ancillary accommodation, as well as significant changes to the surrounding area including new vehicular and pedestrian entrances, two ball courts, play areas, bin store and bicycle shelter.
