SHANNON Airport has broken records over the bank holiday weekend with its busiest day in seven years.
A total of 7,800 passengers travelled through the airport on Friday, June 2. This was a record-breaking figure, which the airport hasn’t seen since 2016.
In May, the airport experienced a significant uplift in passenger traffic too, with a 27% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
CEO of The Shannon Airport Group Mary Considine said that they are continuing to see an "increased volume" of passengers since the start of the year.
“There is a real appetite for overseas travel, especially as we reach peak holiday season,” Ms Considine explained.
“The boost in numbers coincides with our new United Airlines Chicago service and the return of Ryanair’s seasonal services to Corfu and Barcelona-Girona over the Bank Holiday weekend.”
The expansion of routes, including that of UK and European services to and from 18 destinations and to seven countries, is further explained by Ms Considine as she also mentions the record-breaking figures are thanks to the “fruit of [their] labour”.
“This summer, we are providing a gateway for thousands of passengers to 33 destinations across 11 countries in the UK, USA, and Europe.
“We have taken comprehensive measures to ensure a relaxed and hassle-free travel experience, and the fruit of our labour is evident on record breaking days.,” Mary concluded.
