Clare GAA launch fundraiser for young player who suffered 'life-changing injuries'

A fundraiser for a young Clare GAA player, Joe Slattery, who suffered "life-changing injuries" during a training session has raised over €280,000 in just 18 hours.

The talented player who has represented Clare underage at hurling and football, and was a member of this year's county U16 panel, was injured during a training session with his club Corofin on Thursday evening, November 21.

"While training with is beloved parish team, Joe suffered life-changing injuries which will necessitate lifelong care," his uncle Clive Slattery shared on the GoFundMe he has organised.

"Joe is a big brother, a son, a friend and a team-mate. He is loved and respected by all who know him. He has represented Clare in hurling and football and was Junior Cert student of the year 2024 in his school".

"We, Joe’s family, ask for your help in supporting Joe in adapting to his changed life," Clive continued.

"Anything you can contribute will make a difference in Joe's future. In addition, you can help by sharing the page and keeping Joe in your thoughts".

GAA communities across Clare have responded with enormous generousity to news of the young player's heartbreaking injuries.

"Asking all Clare Gaels and beyond to support Joe Slattery who sadly suffered life-changing injuries while training with his beloved club last week," Clare GAA shared on X. 

"Joe has represented Clare in underage hurling and football and we at Clare GAA keep him and his family in our thoughts . Please support by donating what you can and sharing the page," they continued.

"Every contribution helps, so if you could take a moment to donate and share the link, it would mean so much to Joe and his loved ones," Clare GAA County Board Chairman Kieran Keating posted, who also shared the link.

Clubs across Clare have also shared the fundraiser among their members and offered prayers and support for Joe's family and club, including Cratloe, Crusheen, Clarecastle GAA, Camogie & Ladies Football Club, Miltown St Joseph's and Newmarket-on-Fergus.

A prayer service was held last Sunday, November 24, at St Brigid's Church in Corofin for Joe and his family.

"The injury’s Joe sustained playing a game he loves has changed his life and that of his family forever," his club Corofin shared on social media.
