Major funding boost announced for Greenway projects in Clare

Details of the funding was confirmed by the Minister for Transport, Darragh O'Brien

Three Greenway projects in County Clare will be progressed this year following confirmation that €1.85m in funding has been allocated by central government.

Confirmation of the funding was announced as part of a national package, totalling €67m, which was revealed by the Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien

The funding, which will be distributed by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, will be used to progress around 60 Greenway schemes across the country through the planning and design stages.

The projects in Clare that will receive funding include the Kilrush to Kilkee and Ennis to Ennistymon sections of the West Clare Greenway; the O’Brien’s Bridge to Scariff section of the Limerick to Scariff Greenway and the proposed Shannon to Bunratty route.

Clare TD Cathal Crowe has welcomed the announcement of the funding. "I am delighted to see this very welcome funding announcement. There is huge potential in the proposed greenways around Clare and looking at the positive impact felt by communities around other notable greenways nationwide, such as in Mayo and Waterford, the addition of these greenways here will bolster our already attractive tourism potential," he said.

The Fianna Fail TD added: “These greenway projects will offer people all around this county with safe and enjoyable nature walk and cycle routes through some of the most scenic parts of Clare.”

Commenting following the announcement of the funding, Peter Walsh, Chief Executive of TII, said: “The 2025 Greenway funding highlights the commitment of the Department of Transport and the Government to deliver active travel options throughout the country. TII along with our Local Authority partners will continue to deliver and progress these important Greenway Projects.”
