Tributes have come pouring in following the sudden death of Georgie Whelan, founder of Whelan Plant Sales in Barefield.
A native of Kilrush, Mr Whelan sadly passed away on Monday, August 25 surrounded by his loving family at University Hospital Limerick.
Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Susan and brother Tom, he will be missed by his loving wife Ann, sons Alan and George, daughters Aisling and Suzanne, sons-in-law Gerry and Joe, George's partner Aoife, his adored grandchildren Tommy and Anna, his brothers Jackie, Paddy, Joe, Michael and Paul, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, relatives, extended family, neighbours as well as friends and colleagues in Whelan Plant Sales.

One person said, "To the Whelan and extended family. Deepest sympathies on the loss of Georgie. A true pioneer and innovator in the plant hire business."
Micheal Malone of Malone’s Barber Shop commented, "Our sincere sympathy to the Whelan family on the sad passing of Georgie. I will miss our chats & discussions we would always have while cutting your hair & they often lasting well into the late evening but I was always the better after time spent in your company. Georgie may your gentle soul rest in peace."
A third stated, "Our sincere condolences to you Ann, George Jnr, Alan, Aisling, Suzanne, and to George’s brothers and all your extended families. We are all shocked and deeply saddened to learn of George’s sudden passing, he was a great neighbour, a gentleman and an inspiration to all that knew him. We will all miss him and his smile and salute on the road."
Mr Whelan reposed at The Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven in Doonbeg on Wednesday, August 27. His funeral took place today, August 28, with burial afterwards in Doonmore Cemetery.
Whelan Plant Sales Ltd has been closed since Monday, August 25 and will reopen on Monday, September 1.
