ALERT: Investigations underway as third incident of deception is reported in Clare

It is not known whether they are connected

Investigations are underway after a third incident of deception has been reported in the county

According to Gardaí, on Wednesday, October 8, someone approached the injured party in Scariff in an attempt to sell them a product.

The criminal, in this case, appeared legitimate and spoke to the injured party in a familiar manner, using a family member's name to gain their trust. They engaged their services and after a short while, the criminal requested more money. This incident took place at 5pm.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána in the village said, "This was a difficult situation as there was a number of people with the fraudster but thankfully, they managed the situation well and later reported the incident to Gardaí."

This news follows on from two separate reports of deception that have taken place recently in Clare.

In this first incident, which took place in Ennis on September 23, a person was coerced into purchasing knives from a dark-coloured van.

Also in Ennis on October 4, three men in a white van approached an elderly man and asked if he wanted to purchase generators and tools. Under duress, the man, who is aged in his 70s, purchased the items.

Both these matters are being investigated by Gardaí. It is not known whether they are connected.

Gardaí now believe that these fraudsters were in the Mountshannon area and if anyone also encountered these individuals, they are asked to please contact Scariff Garda Station on 061 92790.
