'Medical emergency' forces Caribbean-bound plane to land at Shannon Airport

A PASSENGER who became unwell while flying to the Caribbean was rushed to University Hospital Limerick after her flight was diverted to Shannon Airport on New Year's Day.

Emergency services - including firefighters and paramedics from the National Ambulance Service - as well as airport staff awaited the plane's landing shortly before 2pm. 

The ill woman received immediate treatment before being rushed by ambulance to hospital.

A spokesperson for the Shannon Airport Group confirmed that a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight routing from Amsterdam to the Dutch island of Saint Maarten in the Southern Caribbean diverted to Shannon Airport with a medical emergency on January 1.

"The aircraft landed safely at 1.50pm and was met by emergency services and airport staff. A passenger was transferred by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick," said the spokesperson for the Shannon Airport Group.

The condition of the passenger is not know at this time.
