Ireland heatwave latest: Met Eireann pinpoint 25C weather but it could end with a bang

Met Éireann is predicting a return to 25C temperatures for Ireland but it may not last long, according to their latest weather forecast.

The mercury could rise to 22C on Sunday and 25C in parts by Tuesday of next week. Met Éireann says it will be a "humid and warm start to the week, dry and sunny on Monday but heavy showers or thunderstorms will affect some areas from Tuesday."

Between now and then, it will be warm and damp at times. The Met Éireann forecast for Saturday says: "Cloud and a narrow band of showery, and sometimes heavy, rain over Ulster and Connacht will move southeastwards over the country today, becoming lighter and more patchy. Sunny spells and well scattered showers will follow. Highest temperatures of 16 to 21 degrees in mostly moderate westerly breezes, a little fresher near the north coast.

"Showers will clear early tonight [Saturday] and patches of mist and fog will form as winds become light and variable. Cloud will increase across the southwest overnight, bringing some patches of rain or drizzle. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 12 degrees, staying mildest in the southwest."

For Sunday, forecasters say: "Cloud and patchy rain or drizzle will extend northeastwards across the country tomorrow morning and it'll become humid. More persistent rain will develop in the west and north during the afternoon and evening, while in the south and east it will become drier with some sunny spells developing. Highest temperatures will range between 16 degrees in the north and 22 degrees in the south, with a light to moderate southerly wind.

"Rain will gradually clear from northern areas on Sunday night but it'll stay quite cloudy. Other areas will be dry with clear spells. Patches of mist and fog will form in light southerly or variable winds. Mild and humid with temperatures not falling below 13 to 15 degrees."

The forecast continues into next week: "Mist and fog will clear on Monday morning, leaving a dry, warm and sunny day. Highest temperatures of 21 to 24 degrees with light south to southeast winds.

"A few showers will develop on Monday night but most places will stay dry with clear spells. Winds will be light and variable and patches of mist and fog may form. Mild and humid again with temperatures not falling below 12 to 15 degrees.

"Many parts of the country will have another dry, warm and sunny day on Tuesday. However, heavy showers or thunderstorms are likely to develop in some areas. Highest temperatures of 21 to 25 degrees with light winds.

"A mix of clear spells and scattered heavy showers or thunderstorms [on Tuesday night]. Mild and humid with temperatures not falling below 13 to 15 degrees. Winds will be light and variable.

"There is some uncertainty in the forecast for Wednesday, but more heavy and thundery showers are possible, with temperatures getting into the high teens or low twenties again," Met Éireann's forecast concludes.
