Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney recently submitted a parliamentary question to Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan in relation to the matter

Gardaí in County Clare have seized hundreds of uninsured vehicles over the past year and a half, it has been revealed.

Local Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney recently submitted a parliamentary question to the Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan, in relation to this matter.

Deputy Cooney asked for the number of vehicles seized by Gardaí within Clare-Tipperary Division for having no insurance in 2024 and to date in 2025, by year, in tabular form.

In his response, Minister Callaghan said: “The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána under the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024.

“The table below has been provided to me by the Garda authorities and outlines the yearly breakdown of the number of vehicles seized by Gardaí in the Clare/Tipperary Garda Division for having no insurance in 2024 and so far in 2025.”

The table provided showed that 698 vehicles were seized by Gardaí in the Clare-Tipperary Division for having no insurance in 2024.

As well as that, so far in 2025, a total of 667 cars have been seized for the same offence.

Vehicles seized or detained relate to those detained under Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act.
