'Hansel and Gretel' type cottage chosen as second finalist

The second house through to RTÉ’s Home of The Year final has been chosen, and it might surprise you…

The second episode of the popular show aired this Tuesday, February 27 as, and returned for season 10 to our screens last week.

The three contenders to compete for the second house to be fast-tracked to the final in last night’s episode were a three-storey period property in Dublin, a renovated gate lodge in Tyrone and a 1930s ex-corporation house, also in Dublin.

Over eight weeks, 21 homes in Ireland will be chosen to compete for the title of Home of The Year. Functionality, individuality and clever design are what judges Hugh Wallace, Amanda Bone and Sara Cosgrove look for when scoring houses out of 10.

The second finalist chosen was the ‘Hansel and Gretel cottage’ in Co Tyrone. Compared to the other two houses in Dublin, one modern and cleverly laid out - the other, a maximalist town house, full of character, the historic gate lodge came out on top in week two for its simplicity.

“The interior of this home is completely unexpected,” said judge Amanda Bone.

“This is an effortlessly comfortable home,” added interior designer, Sara Cosgrove.

Scoring all 9’s, photographer Peter, who owns the red-brick haven, was chosen as the second finalist.
